مستخلص: Anaesthesia was required in an African male lion (Panthera leo) from the Pretoria Zoo for dental surgery. For immobilisation and transportation a combination of zolazepam and tiletamine were used at a dose of 3 mg/kg. Medetomidine was administered to improve relaxation. At the veterinary hospital the trachea was intubated, and halothane in oxygen administered for maintenance of anaesthesia during surgery. The mean (+/- SD) heart rate during anaesthesia was 58 (3) beats/min, arterial blood pressure 17.6 (1.7) kPa, and ventilation controlled at 10 breaths/min. Additional medetomidine, zolazepam and tiletamine were administered at the end of surgery for transport back to the zoo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
