مستخلص: The primary crusher is essential equipment employed for comminuting the mineral in processing plants. Any kind of failure of its components will accordingly hinder the performance of the plant. Therefore, to minimize sudden failures, analysis should be undertaken to improve performance and operational reliability of the crushers and its components. This paper considers the methods for analyzing failure rates of a jaw crusher and its critical components application of a two-parameter Weibull distribution in a mineral processing plant fitted using statistical tests such as goodness of fit and maximum likelihood estimation. Monte Carlo simulation, analysis of variance, and artificial neural network are also applied. Two-parameter Weibull distribution is found to be the best fit distribution using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Maximum likelihood estimation method is used to find out the shape and scale parameter of two-parameter Weibull distribution. Monte Carlo simulation generates 40 numbers of shape parameters, scale parameters, and time. Further, 40 numbers of Weibull distribution parameters are evaluated to examine the failure rate, significant difference, and regression coefficient using ANOVA. Artificial neural network with back-propagation algorithm is used to determine R2 and is compared with analysis of variance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Preoperative anaemia is common in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Whilst there is a strong association with increased morbidity and mortality, it is currently unclear whether treatment of anaemia leads to patient benefit. This retrospective study aimed to determine the aetiology of preoperative anaemia in a cohort of patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery over two years at a tertiary hospital. Laboratory data obtained at the preoperative assessment clinic visit were assessed to stratify patients into four groups-iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), possible IDA, anaemia of chronic disease (ACD) and non-anaemic patients with low ferritin according to the 'Preoperative haemoglobin assessment and optimisation template' of the Australian Patient Blood Management (PBM) Guidelines. Of patients with preoperative anaemia, 23.1% had IDA, 6.6% had possible IDA and 70.3% had possible ACD. Of the patients with possible ACD, 30% had a ferritin <100 µg/l, representing limited iron stores or coexisting absolute iron deficiency in the setting of chronic disease. In addition, 46.2% of those with possible ACD had iron studies indicative of functional iron deficiency. Time between assessment and surgery was as little as one day in a third of patients and in only 7% was it more than seven days. Our findings indicate that about one-third of our patients with preoperative anaemia had evidence of iron deficiency, a potentially reversible cause of anaemia. In addition, a significant number had either limited iron stores that may render them iron deficient by surgery, or a functional iron deficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: This retrospective study aimed to determine the prevalence of preoperative anaemia, hypochromia and microcytosis in cardiac surgery patients. Data was analysed for 943 patients (over a two-year period) undergoing coronary artery bypass graft, valve or combined coronary artery bypass graft and valve surgery at a tertiary hospital in South Australia. Overall prevalence of preoperative anaemia was 25.2%, greater in males than females (27.6 vs 19.9%, P <0.01). Of patients with preoperative anaemia, 19.3% had reduced red cell indices (mean corpuscular haemoglobin and/or mean corpuscular volume) compared to 4% of patients without anaemia. The proportion of anaemic patients with low red cell indices was significantly higher in women <50 years and 50-65 years, compared to those >65 years of age (P=0.003). Anaemic patients with low red cell indices had lower preoperative haemoglobin than anaemic patients without low red cell indices (median haemoglobin 112 vs 120 g/l, P=0.008). Compared to non-anaemic patients, anaemic patients had higher transfusion rates (79.8 vs 46.4%, P <0.0001), which were greater in those with reduced red cell indices compared to those with normal red cell indices (93.5 vs 76.6%, P=0.01). This study demonstrated a high prevalence of preoperative anaemia, microcytosis and hypochromia in cardiac surgical patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: The general issues of starting and operating a wind turbine business in Nepal are presented, together with explanation of the effects of the culture, economic and political situation. Practical solutions are discussed as well as the legal and administrative arrangements required to operate the business. The effects of the geographical location on the business are illustrated, together with the impact of a low technical base. These issues will be shown to form a basis of an opportunity for business and social cohesion. Staffing issues are drawn upon to show how a business can have a beneficial effect on the development process of an area. With little government direction of the economy or higher education, considerable efforts in staff training is required. KAPEG's development of its wind energy business is explained with details about how international assistance is instrumental to this industrial development process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of salivary cortisol as a measure of hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function in cocaine dependent individuals. Saliva and total plasma samples were collected from 49 abusers on 3 testing days in the morning, across eight time points per day. Significant associations between saliva and plasma cortisol were observed across all time points collapsed across 3 days in both men and women. These moderately significant correlations suggest that salivary measurements represent a stable, non-invasive and broad indicator of HPA axis functioning in cocaine dependent individuals. مستخلص: The results of surgery for Dupuytren’s disease were prospectively assessed to see if there is a correlation between hand function, the degree of deformity and the post-operative result. A total of 42 patients were followed-up for 6 months. The mean flexion deformity was 81 pre-operatively and 32 post-operatively. The mean Sollerman score improved from 71 (out of 80) pre-operatively to 77 post-operatively. There was a significant correlation between the degree of deformity and the Sollerman score, and also between the improvement in deformity after surgery, and the Sollerman score. We conclude that hand function is worsened by increasing deformity in Dupuytren’s disease and improved by correction of the deformity. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

مستخلص: Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) has been reported to be a useful adjunct in severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) but paediatric literature continues to be scanty. We hereby present three cases of refractory paediatric SLE (pSLE) with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (DAH) and crescentic glomerulonephritis which were treated with TPE as an adjunctive therapy. TPE was carried out in haemodialysis units using the membrane filtration technique. Demonstrable benefit of TPE was seen in all three cases. In refractory pSLE, TPE may be a useful tool and should be considered. The report additionally highlights the feasibility of undertaking TPE in haemodialysis units, which is important as haemodialysis units are more readily available than dedicated apheresis units in developing countries.
