The article presents an overview of lumbar spinal stenosis and its many variations which include congenital stenosis and acquired degenerative stenosis, and which are frequently seen in older people. A discussion of the symptomology of the various forms of lumbar stenosis, diagnosis of the disease, which can involve magnetic resonance imaging, and of the treatment of lumbar stenosis, which can include surgery or nonoperative management, is presented. Research which has been done on the treatment of lumbar stenosis is examined. A case history of a 72 year old woman with lumbar spinal stenosis is offered and discussed. |
