The article focuses on the role of catechol dioxygenases in the catalysis of the opening of an aromatic ring and incorporation of both atoms of a molecule of dioxygen. The initial deprotonation of the ring hydroxyl facilitates the oxidation to a semiquinone-type state and loss of aromatic stabilization of the ring structure. |
