The following report describes the investigation of weight loss and abortion in a Thoroughbred broodmare. The mare was identified to have systolic and diastolic heart murmurs and haematological and clinical chemical examinations revealed a marked inflammatory response. The mare was subsequently diagnosed with bacterial endocarditis affecting both the mitral and aortic valves and was subjected to euthanasia in view of the hopeless prognosis. The characteristic clinical and pathological findings of bacterial endocarditis are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
