الوصف: | This study aims to examine students’ knowledge of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) and preventative measures. Hospital acquired infections (HAIs) originate from a stay in a healthcare facility – this could be hospital or community based. Statistics have shown that an estimated 300,000 patients a year in England develop a healthcare associated infection while in hospital. Hospital acquired infections cost the NHS about £1 billion a year. This study was based on the use of cross sectional survey. Questionnaires with twenty questions were developed and transformed by the researcher using ‘Survey Monkey’ and distributed through facebook. Fifty four out of sixty eight undergraduates and post graduate students on the researcher’s facebook page completed the questionnaire. The data generated from this study was analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS statistical package. The results have been expressed in the form of percentages and frequencies. More than 50% of the students got six of the ten questions correctly in the section which sought to find out their knowledge of hospital acquired infections. In the second section which addressed the issue of their knowledge on preventative measures, more than 50% of the students got nine out of the ten questions in this section correctly. The majority of students knew that hospital acquired infections can be treated as all the students got the answer correctly. Furthermore, about 60.4% of the students knew that 1 in every 30 people is living with the MRSA bacteria. This survey has demonstrated that most of the students studied had knowledge of hospital acquired infections. However, more improvements need to be made to improve the knowledge of hospital acquired infections and preventative measures. |
