مستخلص: This study investigated the association between the quality of marriage as manifested by subjective happiness and common mental disorders in a national sample of the Finnish population. Mental disorders were screened by means of the 12-item General Health Questionnaire. Marriage per se was not found to be associated with common mental disorders. However, men in general, but not those in an unhappy marriage, suffered from mental disorders less frequently than did women. Men and women who were unhappy in their marriages suffered from common mental disorders more often than others who were not. Both men and women in unhappy marriages were found to be at significantly higher risk of common mental disorders as compared with the unmarried and to those in a happy marriage, after adjusting for several confounding factors.
