الوصف: In the tropical savannahs of West Africa, nutrient-deficiency (N and P) and weed infestation of agricultural lands contribute to low yields in food crop production. The existence of a pronounced dry period between cropping seasons makes intercropping cover legume species with upland rice the only feasible option for short fallow improvement. A factorial experiment with two cover crops (Cajanus cajan and Stylosanthes hamata), by two rice cultivars (Wab450-24-3-2-P18-HB [V4] and Wab56-50) and four legume relay-sowing dates (0, 14, 28, 56 days after rice sowing; DARS) was used to assess rice yield and the N contribution of cover crops to the systems. Grain yield losses varied between 1 % and 97 % in V4, and between 1 % and 100 % in Wab56-50 in relay with C. cajan, whereas with S. hamata, yield decreases were between 1 % and 52 in V4 and between 8 % and 61 in Wab56-50. Residual effects of legume residues were not linearly related to the amount of fallow N returned to the soil. Optimum rice yield depended on the combination of rice cultivar, legume species and legume sowing date.
