مستخلص: Marital and couples therapies treats therapy as an opportunity for therapists to instruct and clients to learn new ways of interacting. While considerable work has been done in a variety of settings to explicate the organization of instructional work, we find that there has been very little conversation analytic work done to examine how recipients of instruction learn. In Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), therapists instruct clients on therapeutically informed ways of interacting and then call on clients to engage with each other, in the frame of their relationship, to enact this instruction as 'doing their relationship in a new way' in the therapy session. Prior to the enactment, both clients have participated in and received the therapist's instruction. Thus, what is 'new' for the clients in a therapeutic enactment is that they are doing something together that they have never done before. Furthermore, they are doing it in a way that invites inspection and assessment of the competence with which it is performed. Based on our conversation analytic examination of video of an EFT session, we explicate the accomplishment of therapeutic enactment as learning and identify those features of the interaction that the participants treat as instruction and as learning.
