| الوصف: | Objective: The objective of this study is to determine levels of empathy among nurses and to examine the relationship between empathy and levels of burnout.Methods: This is a descriptive study conducted on 334 nurses working at Intensive Care, Emergency, Internal Diseases-Surgical Units and Outpatient clinics of a public hospital in Ankara between May 1 and November 1, 2013. Survey forms prepared previously in line with the study objective were completed by the nurses under supervision. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy and the Maslach Burnout Inventory were used. Data analyses were assessed with Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman’s Correlation Analysis. Statistical significance value was accepted as p < 0.05.Results: The age of nurses in the study group ranged from 19 to 49 with a mean age of 30.22 ± 6.17 years. 294 nurses (88.0%) were female and 40 (12.0%) were male. Scores obtained from the Scale of Empathy ranged from 69 to 124 with a median of 101.0. A negative relationship was determined between levels of empathy and Personal Accomplishment subscale of the Burnout Inventory (p<0.05).Conclusion: Higher levels of empathy in female nurses may result in positive discrimination towards women in selection of nursing as a profession. Levels of empathy and personal accomplishment are inversely related. Further and comprehensive studies are required to establish factors associated with the level of empathy and examine the relationship with burnout. ; Amaç: Bu çalışma, hemşirelerin empati düzeylerinin saptanması ve empati ile tükenmişlik düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır.Gereç ve Yöntem: 1 Mayıs- 1 Kasım 2013 tarihleri arasında Ankara’da bir devlet hastanesinin Yoğun bakım, Acil servis, Dahili - Cerrahi servisler ve Poliklinik birimlerinde çalışan 334 hemşire üzerinde gerçekleştirilen tanımlayıcı tipte bir araştırmadır.
