Billboards on local highways proclaim that doctors are leaving Ohio because of crippling medical malpractice insurance rates. However, the numbers appear to tell a different story. The number of medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy and podiatric medicine licensed to practice in Ohio hasn't risen as sharply, but it is higher. Of about 4,000 Ohio physicians who participated in a survey conducted by the Ohio State Medical Association, 34% said they expected to close their practices within two years if malpractice insurance rates continued to rise, and 58% said they would close within three years if rates continued on their current path. |
