الوصف: Eleven Arthrobacter, three Agrobacterium, and three Rhizobium cultures were characterized in terms of the electrophoretic properties of dehydrogenases active upon lactate, succinate, malate, glucose-6-phosphate, 6-phosphogluconate, isocitrate, glutamate, and dihydroorotate (K). Comparisons of the zymograms for each organism were made on the basis of selected data. Overall similarities so found corresponded in general with groupings of organisms found previously. A high degree of affinity between the arthrobacters and the rhizobia–agrobacteria seemed unlikely, but the results for glutamic dehydrogenase, dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, and to some extent those for lactic and malic dehydrogenases suggested that there may be some affinity not previously suspected. We have concluded that while dehydrogenase zymograms may be useful for the characterization of microorganisms, their application in bacterial taxonomy is not simple. Original or even edited data would not be appropriate for simple kinds of computer-assisted analysis without means of determining the extent of homology existing between enzymes from different sources.
