The end of the monopoly of manufacture, distribution and sale of beer in Madrid in 1791 led to the implementation and development of this industry in the Spanish capital after the end of the War of Independence. The gradual emergence of breweries, mainly by master brewers from German states, led to this sector becoming the second industry in importance in Madrid behind heavy industry during the eighteen sixties. Also, reducing the distance from the price of beer compared to wine and institutional protection in tax and foreign trade regulations would encourage beer consumption in Madrid to widen its leadership in Spain. El final del monopolio de fabricación, distribución y venta de cerveza de Madrid en 1791 dio paso a la implantación y el desarrollo de esta industria en la capital española a partir del final de la Guerra de la Independencia. La paulatina aparición de fábricas de cerveza, a cargo principalmente de maestros cerveceros p rocedentes de estados alemanes, convertirá este sector, hacia la década de los años sesenta, en la segunda industria madrileña en importancia por detrás de la industria pesada. A simismo, la reducción de la distancia del precio de la cerveza respecto al vino y una protección institucional en materia fiscal y de comercio exterior favorecerán un consumo de cerveza en Madrid que alcanzará con amplitud el liderazgo en España.
