مستخلص: This article discusses the genome of Drosophila melanogaster. The conspicuous genetic effects of P factors brought them to the attention of Drosophila workers well before they were described in detail through molecular techniques. It is difficult to determine when these effects were first reported, since there is no way of knowing whether many of the early observations of unexplained genetic instability were the result of P factors. Each major chromosome of a P strain was seen to act approximately independently of the others. The number and genomic locations of these factors varied widely among different P strains, suggesting that they were mobile, dispersed genetic elements present in the P strains but not in the M strains.
