مستخلص: The question of how socio-economic inequalities at school are preserved, is sometimes answered by pointing to the different attitudes teachers hold towards pupils with different socio-economic backgrounds. In this article an analysis is presented of data of 3760 pupils and 745 educational administrators in 34 Flemish secondary schools. First I examine whether the academic staff culture at school is related to the SES-composition of the school. Special attention is paid to the quantitative operationalisation of academic staff culture. Next I show, by means of multilevel-analyses, that the SES-composition and the academic staff culture determine the chance to fail of individual pupils, taking into account their individual ability, socio-economic status and family structure.
