الوصف: Objective: Improvements in technology of transabdominal ultrasound, and increas-ing experience with sonographic findings in a variety of intestinal diseases including inflammatory bowel disease , have contributed to firmly establishing the role of ultra-sound as a clinically important, non-invasive and widely available imaging modality. The aim of the present study is to determine the current role of bowel US in the diag-nostic work-up of patients with IBD. We furthermore, studied the correlation between the active phase of the diseases and the angiogenetic factors VEGF and bFGF in the patient’s blood serum.Material and Methods: We enrolled 40 patients of the Department of Gastroenterol-ogy that were admitted to the hospital either for relapsing of an already diagnosed in-flammatory bowel disease, or because of a recent diagnosed disease. All patients followed the clinic’s diagnostic protocol and after that, they were evaluated with transabdominal ultrasound, by the same examiner. At the same time we measured the angiogenetic factors VGEF and bFGF, using ELISA, at blood samples taken from the patients and from a group of 40 healthy witnesses. Results: The diagnosis of the inflammatory bowel diseases was performed in our study with a sensitivity of 94, 9%. The highest sensitivity values were achieved in the sigmoid colon, while a diseased rectum was difficult to detect and sensitivity values dropped at 43,5%. Crohn’s disease was detected with a sensitivity of 90,5% and the positive prognostic value was 100%. Surprisingly, ultrasound’s sensitivity for the de-tection of ulcerative colitis was 100% but still rectum was the most difficult anatomic area to explore. VEGF was found to be significantly elevated in our patients group, but this was not verified for bFGF.Conclusion: During recent years high resolution bowel ultrasound has proved to be an accurate non-invasive procedure for the detection of the inflammatory bowel dis-eases. It may be used as a screening imaging technique in patients with clinically suspected ...
