The role of the mother in eating disorders: A psychosocial perspective. (English)

Revista Psicología y Salud; ene-jun2013, Vol. 23 Issue 1, p15-24, 10p

الملخص (بالإنجليزية): A review of published literature on the role of the mother in developing eating disorders is presented, from a psychosocial perspective. Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, are psychiatric pathologies influenced by genetic, psychological, social and environmental factors. Within the family context, it is necessary to clarify the role of the mother in relation to the development and maintenance of maladaptive eating behaviors and body dissatisfaction, frequently present in these disorders. Findings analyses suggest that the main risk factors for the development of maladaptive eating behaviors include: presence of obesity in the mother, restrictive dieting, persuading their daughters to lose or control their weight, excessive importance by mothers to body appearance and shape determined by society, compulsive eating, restrictions by mothers on their daughters eating behavior, psychopathology and the presence of an eating disorder in the mother. These factors also acted as likely predictors of dissatisfaction and altered hunger-satiety sensations in their children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
