الوصف: The history of the previous and the later Papanicolaou smears results with diagnosis of atypical squamous cells (ASC) and its correlation with respective biopsies was retrospectively analyzed. The previous and the later exams which resulted as diagnoses of ASC by cytologic test were investigated, and also the examinations periodicity. Of 60 selected cases of ASC with correlated biopsy results, 57 had the first cytologic diagnosis of ASC-US (undetermined significance) and 3 had ASC-H (cannot exclude high grade lesion) diagnosis. Of 57 cases, 30 (52.6%) were negative on biopsy, 16 (28.1%) had a diagnosis of NIC 1, and 11 (19.3%) presented diagnose discrepancies above 2 degrees. Among ASC-H (100%) all the cases were diagnosed as NIC 1 on biopsy. Of 60 cases, 44 (73.3%) cases who had previous examinations results, 14 (23.3%) were positive. Among patients who had the later cytology exams, 53 (88.3%) had cytologic examinations after being biopsied, and 10 (16.7%) were positive. Concerning the examinations periodicity, 26 (43.3%) were examined 1- year interval, 29(48.3%) at 1 to 3-year interval, and one (1.7%) at a period longer than three years. According to the observed findings the ASC diagnoses were frequently associated with reactional morphologic changes, showing the relevance in carrying out the cyto-histological correlation, since performing cytological follow up only it should be insufficient for adequately managing the patients. It is emphasized the importance in conducting ASC patients follow up every 6 months for assessing the evolutionary control of these atypias and for guiding the introduction of an adequate treatment protocol.
