مستخلص: The article deals with the studies of the fauna of the Tatra Mountain lakes from 1802-1914. The first of such studies were done in 1802, 1804, and 1805 by Stanisław Staszic (poet, philosopher, geologist, writer, translator, statesman and Catholic priest), who first published research on the types of fish found in the mountain lake, Morskie Oko. The author notes the work of Polish researchers who subsequently followed up on Staszic's studies of the Tatra Mountain region's 82 lakes and ponds. Among those mentioned are: Maksymilian Siła-Nowicki; Aleksander Zawadzki; Antoni Wierzejski; Bolesław Kotula; Józef Bąkowski; Jan Jachno; Józef Dziedzielewicz; Stanisław Minkiewicz; and Alfred Lityński. Together, these limnological researchers/naturalists provided data and information about 399 species of water-dwelling animal life unique to the area.
