Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman aiheena on lastensuojelun laitoshuolto. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on ollut selvittää nuorten näkemyksiä hyvän lastensuojelun laitoshuollon elementeistä. Aihetta on tarkasteltu hoitavan arjen, korjaavan vuorovaikutuksen sekä osallisuuden toteutumisen näkökulmista. Aiheen teemoittelu on valikoitunut teoriasta käsin. Tutkielman tavoitteena on ollut tuoda nuorten näkemyksiä esiin laitoshuollon työn kehittämiseksi. Kyseessä on laadullinen tutkimus, joka on toteutettu eläytymismenetelmää soveltavasti käyttäen. Tutkimuksen kohdejoukkona ovat olleet parhaillaan lastensuojelulaitoksiin sijoitetut 13 17-vuotiaat nuoret. Useilla heistä on pitkä kokemus lastensuojelun sijaishuollosta. Aineistoa on analysoitu sisällönanalyysillä käyttäen lähtökohtana tutkimuskysymysten mukaista teemoittelua. Tutkimuksen tekemisen jokaisessa vaiheessa on sitouduttu nuorten osallisuuden toteutumiseen. Nuoret pitävät hyvän lastensuojelun laitoshoidon keskeisinä tekijöinä arjen toiminnallisuutta, vaikuttamismahdollisuuksia omissa asioissa sekä mukavia työntekijöitä, joilla on aikaa ja halua keskustella nuorten kanssa. Nuoret odottavat aikuisilta luottamusta ja siten mahdollisuuksia vaikuttaa sekä omiin arkisiin että isompiin, omaan tulevaisuuteen liittyviin asioihin. Yhtä aikaa aikuisten tulee kuitenkin tarvittaessa puuttua ja ohjata nuorta toimimaan ja valitsemaan itsensä kannalta oikein. Arjen toiminnallisuus pitää sisällään erilaisia harrastusmahdollisuuksia ja mahdollisuuden vaikuttaa sekä niiden sisältöihin että omaan osallistumiseensa. Arjen toiminnallisuudessa tärkeää on yhdessä tekeminen, joka vaikuttaa sekä nuorten keskinäiseen yhteishenkeen että nuorten ja ohjaajien vuorovaikutukseen. Yhteinen toiminta vaikuttaa mielialaan nostavasti. Nuoret näkevätkin yhdeksi hyvän laitoshuollon tekijäksi ohjaajien vastuun mielialojen kannattelussa sekä hyvän mielen rakentamisessa että pahan mielen kestämisessä. Keskeiseksi hyvän laitoshuollon tekijäksi nähdään myös mahdollisuus ystävien tapaamiseen. Jos nuorten näkemyksiä halutaan huomioida laitoshuollon kehittämisessä, tulee työkäytäntöjä muuttaa erityisesti ystävien tapaamisen suhteen. Lisäksi nuorten aito osallisuus edellyttää työntekijöiltä oikeanlaista asennetta ja osallisuuden tärkeyden ymmärtämistä. Tämä tutkimus osoitti hyvin sen, että nuoriin kannattaa luottaa heillä on paljon täysin realistisia ja toimivia ideoita oman arjen kehittämiseen. “Nice workers who listens to me if someone is on my mind”. Young people`s opinions about elements which are needed for good residential care in child welfare. Abstract The subject of this study is the residential care used in child welfare. The purpose of the study has been to find out young people´s opinions about elements which are needed for good residential care in child welfare. The subject has been studied from the viewpoints of therapeutic relationship, therapeutic daily routines and the participation. The themes of the subject have been chosen according to the theory. The goal of the study has been to bring up young people´s opinions in order to improve the work in residential care. This study is a qualitative study, which has been put in to practice applying a sympathetic method as it suites to this study. The subject in this study has been 13 – 17-year-old young people who currently are at the institutions of residential care. Most of them have long experience of foster care. The collected material of the study has been analyzed by using a content analysis. Some of the analyzing has happened by building up themes according to a research question. In every stage of the study the participation of young people has been committed and made sure it has been put in practice. According to young people’s opinions, the main aspects of good residential care in child welfare are daily activities, possibilities to influence their own matters and the staff members who are willing to give time to young people and talk with them. Young people wish to be trusted by adults and in that way to have possibilities to influence their own daily matters but also bigger matters which may affect their future life. At the same time, they want adults to intervene in their matters if needed and to guide them to act and choose right for themselves. The concept, daily activities, includes activities of a different kind and hobbies, but also a possibility to affect what is included in them and how much to join on them. Important daily activities are those which are done together and which in that way affect both a team spirit between young people but also to the good communication between young people and staff members. Activities which are done together raise the mood. According to young people, the staff members’ responsibility to rise up the good mood but also helping to tolerate the bad mood is one aspect for good residential care. One main aspect for good residential care is also seen the possibility to meet friends. If young people`s opinions are cared for to take into consideration when improving residential care everyday routines such as meeting friends need to be changed. Young people`s real participation requires the right attitude of the staff members and the right understanding about the importance of their participation. This study shows that young people are worthy to trust - they have many realistic and useful ideas to improve their own everyday life.
