Broadly speaking, a biomarker is something derived from biological material that can be objectively measured. Measurements may be categorical (e.g., present/absent or 1+/2+/3+), or they may be continuous. While a biomarker can be something as mundane as gender, body surface area, or blood pressure, it can also represent the quantitation of an imaging technique or of a specific molecule or group of molecules from various solid tissues or body fluids.
