The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcomes of case management in healthcare quality for percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) patients. A quasi-experimental research design was conducted on 132 adult patients from a certain medical center. Sixty-six patients who received clinical pathway and routine care were enrolled into the control group. The other 66 patients who received both the clinical pathway and case management care were enrolled into the experimental group. Data of length of hospitalization, medical cost, recognition of self-care, re-admission rate, complication and satisfaction with medical services were collected for comparison and evaluation. The instrumentation included demographics, scale on patient’s recognition of self-care, scale of satisfaction, the checklists of re-admission, complication, hospitalization and cost. Data analyses were conducted with descriptive statistics, chi-square and independent t-test and paired t-test. The average hospitalization was 2.40 days in the experimental group, compared to 3.06 days in the control group. A statistically significant decreasing of 0.66 hospitalization days was found (t=2.04, p=0.043). The mean medical cost were NT$ 87,809 in the experimental group, which was statistically significant difference (t=3.99, p=0.000), in comparison to the cost of NT$100,045 in the control group. In the recognition of self-care grading, post-test examination of these two groups showed a statistically significant difference (t=-9.14, p=0.000). Moreover, patient''''''''s satisfaction grading were 3.65 and 4.77 in the control and experimental groups respectively. Independent sampling t-test on comparisons of the patient''''''''s satisfaction between these two groups showed remarkably statistical difference (t=-15.86, p=0.000). Therefore, case management model should be effective in improving the quality of patient care. The meaningful findings of this study will provide information on the continual quality improvement in PTCA patient''''''''s care, the control of medical cost and the quality of healthcare might lead to further intervention to the research institution. Application to other diseases could also be possible in the near future.
