الملخص (بالإنجليزية): In this article we investigate the development of Finnish teenagers' (12-18 yrs) disposable income during the 30-year period from 1983 to 2013. We also identify which socio-demographic background variables affect their income, and how changes in macro and micro level circumstances affect income over time. Our time series data are derived from the Adolescent Health and Lifestyle Survey that was conducted as part of a nationwide monitoring of adolescent health behaviours. Previous research has not given much attention to the income of teenagers, who are regarded as members of their households. Financial and economic analyses tend to treat households as homogeneous units, assuming that they automatically share the same standard of living. We call this assumption into question, since young people's disposable income is influenced by several factors, such as parenting styles, teenagers' and their parents' attitudes towards money, the availability of part-time work, and even gender. Our results show that the disposable income of teenagers in the 1980s and early 1990s, until the onset of recession, was clearly affected by the prevailing macroeconomic conditions. In particular, the age group 16-18 saw a marked increase in their disposable income during the 1980s upswing, and then a sharp drop in the early 1990s. After the recession, young people's income edged up very slowly, despite strong economic growth in the late 1990s and 2000s. This is explained by the high levels of youth unemployment that continued even after the recession, and by the increased participation of this age group in education. There were only minor socio-economic differences in teenagers' disposable income throughout this period, but gender differences, although narrowing in recent years, were surprisingly persistent. Abstract (Finnish): Nuorten käyttörahojen määrä seurasi taloudellisia suhdanteita aina 1990-luvun lamavuosiin asti.
