The article presents a study, which examined child demographic characteristics, associated with developmental progress of maltreated infants and young children enrolled in a therapeutic day treatment program. An association between child abuse and neglect and developmental delay for maltreated children generally is accepted. The types of delays demonstrated have included social-emotional, speech, cognitive motor, and physical development. Developmental test scores were analyzed to evaluate the program's differential effects on three subgroups of the study population. The subgroups were defined by sex of the child, race of the child, and reason for the child's intake into the therapeutic program. These three demographic characteristics were chosen because previous studies indicated these variables might contribute to differences in developmental gains. The children were enrolled in the treatment program for a mean of 9.8 treatment months. In all cases, protective service workers referred the children to the treatment program. |
