مستخلص: We explore the extent and nature of occupational mobility and labor market attachment for women who were working without official papers in the United States. We seek to determine whether there is significant mobility for unauthorized working women, and if so, whether it represents occupational churning (moving into another traditional migrant job) or assimilative mobility. Methods. We analyze data from a sample of Latin American women who later received amnesty under the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. We use multinomial logit estimation on occupational mobility. Results. Just after migration, Latin American women have high labor force participation rates and concentrate in few occupations. We find that women's occupational mobility is mostly occupational churning, and it is more likely to be the social and economic conditions of the job, rather than a woman's human capital skills, that are significantly related to mobility patterns. Education and English ability are, however, significantly related to movement out of traditional migrant occupations. Conclusion. We conclude that a small segment of the secondary labor market will remain a core of women's unauthorized employment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
