الوصف: Aim: The purpose of this study was to understand the effects that a lack of interprofessional working can have on multi-professional practice within a primary health care setting. Design: This qualitative study explored the views and perceptions of an NHS primary care team's interprofessional working for multi-professional practice processes and whether it worked in practice. A structured questionnaire was used on 16 participants to identify themes and to highlight any future research needed in this area. Results: Themes emerging from the questionnaires included communication being the key element in interprofessional working for multi-professional practice. Fear of addressing issues with other senior members of staff was stated. It was also mentioned that some felt the NHS was not set up to encourage good working relationships, but it was also noted that the study setting was lucky to have a team that respected each other. It was felt that meetings to discuss issues affecting patient care were not provided on days when all staff were present. In addition, it was noted that there was no process in place to ensure those not present at meetings received the information and commented on it. Conclusion: Although interprofessional working for multi-professional practice is not a new phenomenon, it was clear to see from the findings of this small study that it did not always work effectively. There are many reasons why this could be, but lack of communication within the workplace was one clear issue that all participants highlighted. While many felt at ease discussing issues affecting collaborative practice with those in more senior roles, few felt that they could approach seniors without feeling that their concerns are ignored or dismissed. All participants noted that if the most senior staff show how to work effectively then the rest would follow suit.
