A novel and accurate method was developed for the determination of folpet and phthalimide residues in tea by solid-phase extraction (SPE) in combination with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). According to related studies, folpet is easily degraded into phthalimide during sample pretreatment and GC injection. In this study, the conversion of all folpet to phthalimide prior to sample extraction and purification was proposed for the first time. An isotopic internal standard was used for quantification. The average recoveries ranged from 80.5 to 92.3% with RSD ≤7.2%. The limit of quantification for phthalimide was 5.0 µg/kg. The phthalimide content was accurately determined and converted to the folpet content to satisfy the requirements of regulations. The detected samples were further confirmed by gas chromatography time-of-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-TOF HRMS). This was a novel and particular attempt to resolve issues regarding folpet degradation, and satisfactory results were obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
