مستخلص: This article presents the results of a molecular pathology study on H5N1 infection or bird flu. Human infection with the avian influenza H5N1 is an emerging infectious disease that shows up with respiratory symptoms. Previous studies have suggested it could also target other organs in humans. The authors looked at post-mortem tissues of two infected adults, one of whom was pregnant. Tests detected viral genomic sequences and antigens in type II epithelial cells of the lungs as well as changes in the trachea, T cells of the lymph nodes and neurons of the brain and in the placenta of the unborn child. The authors say that this proves H5N1 virus can infect more than the lungs and could be transmitted from mother to fetus.
