•The percentage of students applying to surgical residencies was associated with a program's having more additional surgical clinical opportunities (e.g., non-sub-internship surgical electives)•Surgery clerkship duration, number of required services, number of subspecialty services offered, or number of advanced clinical electives was not associated with the percentage of students applying to surgical residencies•Similarly, these curricular elements were not associated with recruitment or retention rates into surgical specialties |
