Recently, Miller has shown that half the patients for whom medication is prescribed fail to comply with dosage instructions of physicians. With the growth of such subprofessional job categories as physician's assistant and paramedic, it is important to assess the likelihood of patient compliance to advice given by personnel of lower perceived status than "doctors." In a related study, the advice of a psychologist was more likely to be followed when he was referred to as "doctor" than as "mister." In dental practice, patients are often given advice by the dental assistant or office secretary. In this study, equivalent advice was given by dentists, dental assistants, and secretaries. Compliance was hypothesized to increase with perceived status of the communicator. Shortell found that "patients" ranked dentists 21 out of 41 on a scale of health-field expertise. While there were no rankings for assistants, practical nurses were ranked 38. There were no data for secretaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
