The author reflects on his writing a biography of writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He says that he did not intend to write a biography of Goethe, but rather a shorter writing that would put the record right. He formed the idea of writing an introduction to Goethe's works that would set them in the context of his intellectual development. But it was long before he admitted to himself that his critical study of Goethe was turning into a biography. |
