مستخلص: The article presents a study on the brousse tigrée vegetation patterns on the laterite plateau surfaces of southern Niger. It was found out that these patterns were the result of linear differentiation of woodland and bareland as a response to shallow soil conditions in a zone of limited rainfall that give rise to intense root competition. Moreover, the patterns are self-perpetuating with the proportions of woodland and bare ground being related to total rainfall. Relative to this, large new areas could be created by termite activity and the original differentiation is initiated through this manner despite of the stability of the main elements of the patterns.
