مستخلص: Design studies for vacuum magnetic field configurations were made numerically for a toroidal plasma confining system with a three-dimensional magnetic axis (the helical solenoid). The purpose of this paper is to suggest favourable configurations which possess magnetic wells (a depth greater than 1.0%), a low aspect ratio (? 10) equal to that of existing and proposed planar axis stellarators, and modest variations of Q=\intdl/Bfor reducing Pfirsh-Schlüter currents. It is shown that promising configurations satisfying the requirements described above can be created only by modular toroidal field coils with moderate non-circular deformations, slight twistings and adequate swings.
