مستخلص: The article focuses on the controversy of using drug Clioquinol for treatment. In September 1970, the Japanese health authorities withdrew all anti-diarrhoeal preparations containing clioquinol on the suspicion that they were responsible for a serious puzzling neuropathy. Clioquinol had been used in the treatment of diarrhoea in Japan for three decades before subacute myelo-opticneuropathy (SMON) was recognized. The fact for instance that some 15% of the victims apparently had never taken clioquinol may merely reflect the difficulty of obtaining precise drug histories from patients and indicate the existence of other factors in the etiology of the disease. Still the drug is used for treatment of amoebiasis in many countries.
