مستخلص: Informed by a labeling theory perspective, the authors examine the difficulties in diagnosing depression in elderly persons. Two popular diagnostic tools, the DSM-III and depression scales, are used to illustrate the value judgements, theoretical biases, and insensitivity to geriatric norms that underlie the diagnostic decisions. The implications of these problems are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
