•There is no accepted gold standard technique to diagnose shunt lumen obstruction.•Common methods to assess shunt blockage are invasive, with associated infection and bleeding risk.•Constructive Interference in Steady State clearly differentiates CSF and adjacent structures.•We demonstrate the use of CISS MRI in diagnosing proximal shunt obstruction.•CISS MRI may be a useful adjunct in diagnosing proximal shunt lumen obstruction. |
