The article provides information on the population trends of Black-browed Albatrosses Thalassarche melanophrys at Diego de Almagro Island in Chile. The study is set in the backdrop of a declining population of Black-browed Albatrosses at some of the 12 breeding sites like at the Falkland Islands and at South Georgia. Longline fisheries are thought to be responsible for this situation, which in turn has raised the conservation alarm. The results of the study indicate the existence of six colonies and a total of 15,594 albatrosses on the west and south coasts of Diego de Almagro island. The study, according to the authors, took into account factors like the birds' habitat, time of the day, weather and the stage of the breeding cycle. |
