مستخلص: This article presents a study that examined the impact of short intervals between pregnancies on the risk of delivering prematurely. About four percent of nearly 4,500 women who gave birth at a Boston hospital between August 1977 and March 1980 and who had at least one previous term birth delivered prematurely during the study period. This percentage was highest among those who has become pregnant within three months of their last birth and lowest among those who waited 19 to 24 months between pregnancies. However, when the researchers controlled for the effects of a large number of background characteristics, they found that the risk of a premature birth was not significantly increased at any interval. An earlier study of the same sample had indicated that the length of time between pregnancies was strongly and inversely related to the risk of having an underweight baby.
