الوصف: Pulmonary edema is a known complication of high-altitude exposure occurring episodically among persons exposed acutely to high altitude. Interstitial pulmonary edema has been shown to result in gas trapping in dependent lung zones due to early airway closure. Dependent airway closure can be detected by means of the lung closing volume and the closing volume has been shown to increase in interstitial pulmonary edema. A study to investigate the possibility that subclinical, interstitial pulmonary edema occurs as a regular feature of high-altitude exposure has been carried out, using the volume of phase IV as an assay for relative changes in the pulmonary extravascular water volume.
