The article examines retinal vascular caliber as a potential biomarker for retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy, the three major microvascular complications of diabetes. It describes the current status of early biomarkers for diabetes complications. A discussion of the abnormalities of retinal vascular caliber as a biomarker of diabetes vascular complications is provided. It relates the latest methods for dynamic studies of retinal vessels such as fluorescent nanoparticle imaging. |
