This article discusses a study which aimed to offer a rapid, structured assessment and an electrocardiogram (ECG) for patients with transient loss of consciousness (T-LOC) or blackouts. The study seeks to identify high risk, reduce misdiagnoses, reduce hospital admission rates for low-risk patients and offer onward specialist referral. It found that the majority of patients with T-LOC had syncope and very few had epilepsy. It also showed that a high proportion of the patients had an abnormal ECG. |
