Highlights: [•] Paper pulp biografting can be obtained by laccase and ferulic acid (FA) treatment. [•] Laccase-FA biografting results in strong kappa number and acid content increases. [•] The coupling linkages were investigated by 2D NMR of lignin isolated from pulps. [•] Aromatic correlations in the NMR spectra showed that FA is C4-etherified.
