الوصف: Objective: Autophagy, as a cellular pathway involved inremoving damaged proteins and organelles, performs a vitalfunction in the homeostasis and fate of cells. Natural compoundsof coumarin (CO) are found in a variety of herbs. Due to theirmany medicinal properties, including antitumor and antiproliferative activity, they are involved in apoptosis and autophagyprocesses. This investigation desired to analyze the apoptotic andautophagic effects of p-coumaric acid (PCA) and CO on HT-29cells cultured in fibrin hydrogel.Materials and Methods: Cell viability and apoptotic andautophagic changes were evaluated by MTT assay, AcridineOrange, 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), andmonodansylcadaverine (MDC) staining. The expression Bax, Bad,Bcl2, Lc3, Beclin-1, P53 and Atg5 was respectively measured byqRT-PCR and Western blotting. Results: CO (IC50=25 μM) and PCA (IC50=150 μM) had a doseand time-dependent cytotoxic effect in HT-29 cells. So, thecytotoxic effects of CO were significantly higher than PCA andthese differences were also evident in cell morphologyinvestigations. The data illustrated a high expression of proapoptotic and pro-autophagic genes and a declined expression ofanti-apoptotic and anti-autophagic genes. Conclusion: CO (that was more potent) and p-coumaric acidinduced autophagy via PI3K/Akt/mTOR and AMPK/mTORsignaling on HT-29 cells.

الوصف: Objective: This study was done to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo effects of the essential oil (OE-CL) and nanoemulsion (N-CL) of Cymbopogon flexuosus against Trichomonas gallinae. Materials and Methods: In vitro assays were done with 106 parasites and OE-CL and N-CL in the concentrations: 110, 220, 330, 440, 550, 660, 770 and 880 µg/ml and four controls: CN (culture medium and trophozoites), MTZ (trophozoites plus 800 µg/ml of metronidazole), TW (trophozoites plus vehicles used for solubilization of derivatives (0.01% Tween) and NB (blank nanoemulsion 880 µg/ml). The in vivo assay was done in 35 quails (Coturnix coturnix) infected experimentally 4x104 mg/kg, were divided in seven groups (n=5): A (control–healthy), B (control infected), C (control TW 0.01%), D (NB 0.88 mg/kg), E (drug MTZ 25 mg/kg, F (OE-CL at 0.55 mg/kg ) and G (N-CL at 0.44 mg/kg), during 7 consecutive days. Results: The in vitro test showed that the OE-CL (550 μg/ml) and N-CL (440 μg/ml) concentrations reduced the trophozoites viability in 100%. In the in vivo test, the treatment with OE-CL was efficient on the 4th treatment day and the N-CL after the 3rd day, and the MTZ in the therapeutic concentration was efficient on the 7th day. Conclusion: It can be observed in this study that the lemon grass has natural potential antitrichomonal activity against T. gallinae in vitro and in vivo.

الوصف: benefits due to its very potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Despite its widespread use, it has not been validated for use in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This study was conducted to examine histomorphological effects of SJ seed on BPH that usually causes bladder outlet obstruction. Materials and Methods: There were a total of six groups of animals each comprising 5 adult male rats. Apart from group 1 (normal control), in the remaining five groups, BPH was induced. Group 2 (negative control) was sacrificed immediately after BPH induction; groups 3 and 4 received the extract at 300 and 600 mg/kg respectively by gavages for thirty days; group 5 received finasteride (0.1 mg/kg) for thirty days and group 6 received the extract (600 mg/kg) simultaneously with the steroid administration for thirty days. The animals’ were weighed before the experiment and subsequently every three days until the end of the study. Results: The extract caused marked decrease in prostate weight of rats with BPH with histo-morphology of the tissue showing degenerated stromal and epithelial cells with few epithelial involutions of glandular tissue. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) level as well as testosterone level significantly (p

الوصف: Naturally occurring substances mentioned in medieval medical literatures currently have, and will continue to have, a crucial place in drug discovery. Avicenna was a Persian physician who is known as the most influential medical writers in the Middle ages. Avicenna`s Canon of Medicine, the most famous books in the history of medicine, presents a clear and organized summary of all the medical knowledge of the time, including a long list of drugs. Several hundred substances and receipts from different sources are mentioned for treatment of different illnesses in this book. The aim of the present study was to provide a descriptive review of all anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs presented in this comprehensive encyclopedia of medicine. Data for this review were provided by searches of different sections of this book. Long lists of anti-inflammatory and analgesic substances used in the treatment of various diseases are provided. The efficacy of some of these drugs, such as opium, willow oil, curcuma, and garlic, was investigated by modern medicine; pointed to their potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. This review will help further research into the clinical benefits of new drugs for treatment of inflammatory diseases and pain.
