Nassau Senior [14] is usually credited with the development of the theory of abstinence (Bowley [1]), or at least with having brought a contemporary development to a head (Schumpeter [12], p. 639). He is thus acknowledged as having extended the classical analysis of costs by treating profits as the reward for a sacrifice. The recent bicentenary of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations [17] has generated a large number of papers on Smith, including at least two surveys (Recktenwald [9], West [20]). The survey by Recktenwald draws our attention to the characteristics of a new era of studies of Smith, one of which is an increased emphasis on viewing Smith's work as an integrated whole. This description may perhaps be applied to the present paper, which argues that Adam Smith's definition and introduction of the term "abstinence" in the Theory of Moral Sentiments has been overlooked. In particular, it will be suggested that Smith's definition of abstinence, his emphasis on the difficulty of undertaking abstinence, and his statement of the prospective gain motivating abstinence, have much in common with Senior's treatment.
