The author reflects on the advancements in myocardial protection. He discusses the history of the pursuit for myocardial protection, which started upon the introduction by Bigelow of the University of Toronto, Ontario to hypothermia in 1950. He mentions the development of other techniques to protect myocardium including warm heart surgery, cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), and warm blood cardioplegia. He notes that myocardial protection field will continually change as patients population change. |
