مستخلص: An illness leading to total or partial disability connected with the necessity of a change in social status, usually leads to disturbances of personality, amongst which the most common is anxiety. Patients with a high anxiety level make little progress in their rehabilitation and adapt with greater difficulty to their environmcnt. Anxiety, therefore, contributes to a poor prognosis (Goldstein 1942). Personality changes in aphasia may be 'primary', when they appear as a consequence of anatomical changes taking place in the brain as a result of damage, and 'secondary', when they are the reaction of the patient to the limits on various types ofactivity. such as communication and changes in social status. It is possible to differentiate between the various symptoms to determine whether anxiety is the direct result of damage to a certain part of the brain or the struggle of a changed organism trying to adapt to the environment. It may be suggested that the changes in personality observed in aphasics is only an accentuation of the characteristics of behaviour existing prior to illness related to brain damage which can cause loss of control (Eisenson 1963).
