الوصف: Faroese appeared as a written language around the turn of the nineteenth century at a time when a small but not insignificant manuscript culture arose to record ballads and other texts. This article demonstrates the role of print in the newly-formed Faroese manuscript culture, whose participants included scribes and collectors both on the Faroe Islands and in Denmark.

الوصف: Grammaticalisation as standardly conceived is a change whereby an item develops from a lexical to a grammatical or functional mean- ing, or from being less to more grammatical. In this paper we show that this can only be part of the story; for a full account we need to understand the syntactic structures into which grammaticalising elements fit and how they too develop. To achieve this end we con- sider in detail the history of definiteness marking within the noun phrase in North Germanic, and in particular in Faroese. We show how this change requires us to distinguish between projecting and non-projecting categories, and how a category can emerge over time and only subsequently develop into a head with its own associated functional projection. The necessary structure, rather than being in- trinsic to an aprioristic universal grammar, grows over time as part of the grammaticalisation process. We suggest that this in turn ar- gues for a parallel correspondence theory of grammar such as the one adopted here, Lexical-Functional Grammar, in which different dimensions of linguistic structure can change at different rates

الوصف: The overflow of dense water from the Nordic Seas through the Faroese Channel system was investigated through combined laboratory experiments and numerical simulations using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology General Circulation Model. In the experimental study, a scaled, topographic representation of the Faroe-Shetland Channel, Wyville-Thomson Basin and Ridge and Faroe Bank Channel seabed bathymetry was constructed and mounted in a rotating tank. A series of parametric experiments was conducted using dye-tracing and drogue-tracking techniques to investigate deep-water overflow pathways and circulation patterns within the modelled region. In addition, the structure of the outflowing dense bottom water was investigated through density profiling along three cross-channel transects located in the Wyville-Thomson Basin and the converging, up-sloping approach to the Faroe Bank Channel. Results from the dye-tracing studies demonstrate a range of parametric conditions under which dense water overflow across the Wyville-Thomson Ridge is shown to occur, as defined by the Burger number, a non-dimensional length ratio and a dimensionless dense water volume flux parameter specified at the Faroe-Shetland Channel inlet boundary. Drogue-tracking measurements reveal the complex nature of flow paths and circulations generated in the modelled topography, particularly the development of a large anti-cyclonic gyre in the Wyville-Thompson Basin and up-sloping approach to the Faroe Bank Channel, which diverts the dense water outflow from the Faroese shelf towards the Wyville-Thomson Ridge, potentially promoting dense water spillage across the ridge itself. The presence of this circulation is also indicated by associated undulations in density isopycnals across the Wyville-Thomson Basin. Numerical simulations of parametric test cases for the main outflow pathways and density structure in a similarly-scaled Faroese Channels model domain indicate excellent qualitative agreement with the experimental observations and measurements. ...

الوصف: Faroese dispalys two different pronunciations of hj- in anlaut: [j] before the voiceless approximates [l̥] and [r̥] as in hjálpa ‘to help’, hjarta ‘heart’; [tʃ] elsewhere as in hjá ‘by, with’. This development from Old Norse [hj] comes via the intermediate stage [j̥], which later undergoes dissimilation of voice to [j] before voiceless approximates. A parallel development occurs in the Norn language of Orkney and Shetland, providing further evidence for a Faroese-Norn subgrouping of Insular Norse.

مصطلحات موضوعية: Faroese, language acquisition, MacArthur–Bates CDI, net-based MBCDI data collection, vocabulary
الوصف: The focus of this article is Faroese children’s early vocabulary acquisition using a Faroese adaptation of the MacArthur–Bates Communicative Development Inventories (MBCDI) parental report. The study is a population-based cross-sectional study including 1135 children aged 8–36 months. The article has two objectives: the first is to describe the Faroese adaptation of the MBCDI, and the second is to examine Faroese children’s early vocabulary acquisition. Selected percentile levels for vocabulary comprehension and production are presented, as well as gender differences and developmental trends. The study finds evidence for a spurt in productive vocabulary in the second year of life, and that vocabulary comprehension preceded production, with both showing increases with age similar to those described in the literature for other languages. Girls had an advantage in vocabulary production over boys, resulting in a significant gender difference. Finally, the early lexical composition of Faroese children is notable in that it contains a substantial number of baby-word forms.

الوصف: Udgivelsesdato: August ; I entertain the idea that the cross-linguistic variation in the licensing of NEG-shift, the movement of negative objects to spec-NegP, can be accounted for by a few representational constraints that are not directly related to case licensing or feature checking, and which potentially conflict with Structure Preservation and Economy. The languages fall into three overall groups: Group 1 has NEG-shift across the main verb; group 2 has neutralization of optionality between versions with no and not any; group 3 has object in situ. When the selecting head is a preposition rather than a verb, group 1 is divided into group 1a (stranding), 1b (pied-piping), and 1c (neutralization).
