مستخلص: Background: The majority of wheelchair rugby players are male individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) at the level of cervical segments. SCI results in paralysis of four extremities, loss of sensation and dysfunctioning of the autonomic nervous system below the lesion. In individuals with quadriplegia the peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) is limited by reduced muscle mass available for exercise and impaired autonomic nervous system responses to exercise. Therefore, SCI reduces ability to respond to exercise training due to limiting factors specific to this condition. Wheelchair rugby is a team game that combines short intensive sessions of exercise over an extended playing time, thus it requires aerobic capabilities. The aim of the study was to investigate the physiological response to maximal performance and to evaluate the effect of a one-year training period on these physiological responses in wheelchair rugby players with quadriplegia. Fourteen participants completed the maximal exercise test on a motorized treadmill originally adapted for wheelchairs. The peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) was determined using a continuous incremental test at the beginning of 2003 and 2004. The peak oxygen uptake was significantly higher in 2004(27.36 ± 4.80ml· min-¹·kg-1) compared to 2003 (19.86 ± 4.89 ml·min-1·kg-1) in wheelchair rugby players with quadriplegia. These results demonstrated that one year training improved the physiological response to maximal performance in wheelchair rugby players with quadriplegia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
