Corsica is an island region of France in the Mediterranean Sea to the southeast of France and north of the Italian island of Sardinia. It is officially incorporated into France as a territorial collectivity, which confers Corsica with the dual powers of both a department and a region under French constitutional law. Corsican separatist groups have been active in Corsica since the 1970s, with some separatists lobbying for greater levels of autonomy while others call for outright independence from France. In 2023, French president Emmanuel Macron made a historic offer to Corsican separatists, proposing to grant the island greater levels of autonomy while maintaining it as part of the French federal structure. Macron’s offer followed a turbulent period of violence in Corsica. |
