The article discusses the book Economic Integration in NAFTA and the EU: Deficient Institutionality, edited by Kirsten Appendini and Sven Bislev. Twelve papers, the product of a workshop held near Copenhagen, Denmark in March 1997, explore the interface between inequality and integration in NAFTA and the European Union, critiquing the economic institutions created to implement the integration project in each case. Papers discuss institutions, power relations, and unequal integration in the Americas; free trade, local institutions, and the case of Mexican peasants; NAFTA, the European Union, and the question of deficient institutionality in the global context; economic integration and the construction of the efficient peasant; labor, economic integration, and the case of the electronics sector in Mexico; and environmental cooperation before and after NAFTA. It also discusses whether the institutions and mechanisms created by NAFTA will help erode or reinforce inequalities between Mexico and its two trade partners; and successful integration and economic distress for Mexico. |
